Widened pulse pressure is a classical sign of increasing intracranial pressure (ICP). As ICP rises, it can lead to changes in the cardiovascular system. The body attempts to maintain cerebral perfusion pressure by increasing the systolic blood pressure while diastolic pressure may remain relatively stable or decrease. This leads to an increased gradient between systolic and diastolic pressures, resulting in a widened pulse pressure.

The increased ICP can cause a variety of neurological signs, but widening of the pulse pressure is a specific physiological response reflecting the body’s compensatory mechanisms in response to increased intracranial tension.
